Note
|
William Ray junior, his mother, Sarah Wade, father, William Ray, and stepfather, Nathaniel Boon, farmed and operated the Three Brothers Inn. William retained the inn but also took up squatting runs near Wagga Wagga, and in 1855 purchased Mount Pleasant near Campbelltown from his brother-in-law, John Jenkins of Gundagai. He died in Marrickville at his son's (George Robert Ray) house Mismanagement led to insolvency in 1869. William Ray and his wife, Eliza, had eleven children. Their two-story home at Campbelltown was richly furnished. On the ground floor was a formal room with cedar tables, chairs, sofas and sideboard. There were six pictures on the wall, work boxes and books, china vases and candlesticks, a bird cage and a clock. The parlour was fashionably cluttered with a loo-table, whatnot, chiffonier, cottage piano, chairs and sofa with carpet on the floor, curtains on the windows and pictures on the walls. The back dining-room was furnished with cedar chairs and leaf-table and boasted an ornamental clock, glass decanter, cruet-stand and knife box. There was one bedroom downstairs with a cedar bed and child's cot, washstands and commode chair. Two bedrooms upstairs slept at least seven people, with one double cedar bed and a single bed in the first bedroom and two double beds in the second bedroom. In an adjoining cottage was another furnished bedroom and a spare room with bedstead. There was accommodation for at least two servants, one sleeping in the dairy and another in the detached kitchen. In the yard were carts and dray, harness, ploughs, tools, shingles and tubs and wash boilers for the outdoor laundry. |
