Agency: Australian Imperial Force Note: Military Records Military Records Joined on 9 May 1915 into the 19th Battalion. He was 21yrs and 5 months at the time of enlistment and was working as a Farrier. He had been an apprentice for H Woodbrige, Bayles Street, Wagga Wagga for 3 years. His parents were living on the property 'Waratah' Wagga when he enlisted. He had left school and joined the cadets and had been training with them for 15 months. He enlisted at Liverpool on 16 May 1915. Regimental number- 1088 His physical description was- fair skin, blue eyes, 16 stone, fair hair and 5ft, 4inches tall. He is listed as being sent to the Gallipoli Peninsula 16 August 1915. Then in 1916 he is listed as having Lymphatic Leukaemia and was taken to a British Hospital. He underwent an operation at 3rd Auxillary Hospital to remove glands in late January. On 28 January, the medical board found him disabled and unfit for further service. He died en route back to Australia on the ship 'Nestor', 1.40pm 16 February 1916 from Scepticaemia and Lymphatic Leukaemia. He was buried at sea. |

Cause of death: Scepticaemia and Lymphatic Leukaemia Note: Letter from father regarding the death of Roydon: Letter from father regarding the death of Roydon: Waratah The Officer in Charge- Base Records Dear Sir, I have received the sad news of the death of my son at sea, whilst returning home from Gallipoli and Egypt, on a ship which was expected to arrive in Melbourne about the middle of this month. Needless to say, the news came as a terrible shock to his parents, brothers and sisters and we are quite in the dark about as to any particulars concerning his death As we would like to get all his personal belongings, what is the proceedure? Will they be carried on to Sydney from where he enlisted, or will they be taken off the boat at Melbourne and who will be likely to get them? Then again, my son wrote me from Gallipoli, stating that he had left some things in Alexandria, before proceeding to the Peninsula. Could you inform me if I would be able to get these, if they are still there, and how would I proceed. As my son was expected (by us) to be coming home in fairly good health, the sad news came very hard and I feel sure you will excuse in endeavouring to collect his bits of personal effects by approaching you with the above questions. I have heard that the name of the boat he was on was "The Nestor", but don't know if that is correct. We would very much like to know when the boat left Egypt and what happened to cause the poor lad to die from Scepticaemia If you can assist us in the above matter, your help would be much appreciated.
