The Officer in Charge- Base Records
Victoria Barrack's Melbourne

Dear Sir, I have received the sad news of the death of my son at sea, whilst returning home from Gallipoli and Egypt, on a ship which was expected to arrive in Melbourne about the middle of this month. Needless to say, the news came as a terrible shock to his parents, brothers and sisters and we are quite in the dark about as to any particulars concerning his death

As we would like to get all his personal belongings, what is the proceedure? Will they be carried on to Sydney from where he enlisted, or will they be taken off the boat at Melbourne and who will be likely to get them? Then again, my son wrote me from Gallipoli, stating that he had left some things in Alexandria, before proceeding to the Peninsula. Could you inform me if I would be able to get these, if they are still there, and how would I proceed.

As my son was expected (by us) to be coming home in fairly good health, the sad news came very hard and I feel sure you will excuse in endeavouring to collect his bits of personal effects by approaching you with the above questions.

I have heard that the name of the boat he was on was "The Nestor", but don't know if that is correct.

We would very much like to know when the boat left Egypt and what happened to cause the poor lad to die from Scepticaemia

If you can assist us in the above matter, your help would be much appreciated.

Yours faithfully Robt. J Hurst
