Note: WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 25th, 1901. SENTENCES. WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 25th, 1901. SENTENCES. William Joseph Brooker, who was found guilty the previous day of larceny, was brought up for sentence. Accused's mother was called, and testified to his appearing a little silly at times and after imbibing intoxicating liquors was like a madman. He always, when working, helped to support her. In passing sentence, his Honor remarked that accused no doubt was brought to his present position by drink. A number of minor convictions were recorded against him, but if there had been one for stealing the sentence he was about to impose would have been very severe. The seventh extended system he would undergo in gaol was no joke, and hoped it would have remedial effects. Note: MONDAY MAY 29. (Before Messrs H W Luhrs and Porter, J's.P.) MONDAY MAY 29. (Before Messrs H W Luhrs and Porter, J's.P.) William Joseph Brooker and Frederick Brooker (brothers, and strangers to Parkes) were charged with stealing some harness from Mrs Birmingham on the 21st inst. Accused, who were undefended, asked no questions, and gave no evidence in defence. The younger brother pleaded guilty and endeavoured to shield his elder brother who pleaded not guilty. The accused were camped near Mrs Birmingham's but departed early on the Monday morning. Mrs Birmingham reported the loss to the police and Sergeant Thorn and Constable Keirnarn followed the tracks of a cart which the accused were driving, eventually catching the accused near Ye val. The stolen harness (identified by Mrs Birmingham) was found in the cab in which accused wore riding. The bench fined the accused £2 each or a month in Forbes gaol. Ryan, J.P., charges of having been found drunk and having used indecent language in Baylis street on Tuesday. The police stated that Brooker was found drunk at 11 o'clock. He was asking people for money and using indecent language. There were previous convictions against Brooker, who was fined in default 24 hours imprisonment for having been found drunk and £2 in default 14 days imprisonment with hard labor for having indecent language.
