Criminal Trial
Note: Lawrence was charged with stealing four sheep - the property of William Rounds who was a butcher living in Westminster. William asked his servant John Harrip to drive the sheep out onto the Tothill Fields common so they could graze. According to the trial, Lawrence stole the sheep. As he was a drover (noted at Mary's trial) and lived very close to Tothill Fields, he would have frequented Tothill Fields regularly and would have known the people who also grazed their sheep there. He also would have known William Rounds as Lawrence's wife Mary came from a 'great family of butchers'. I'm not sure what happened to Lawrence, as I can't locate a follow up to the trial paper. Mary Wade descendent Stephen Wilson discovered Lawrence's criminal past and advised members of the Mary Wade Family History Group on Facebook. It demonstrates that Mary was no stranger to the world of criminal activity.
