Note: WIFE DESERTION. WIFE DESERTION. John Brooker appeared to answer the complaint of his wife, Elizabeth Brooker, for deserting her, and neglecting to provide the means of support for herself and child. Mr. Willans appeared for Mrs. Brooker. The Bench suggested to the principals to this family quarrel, the advisability of settling their differences without the intervention of the Court. Mr. Willans said that he had strenuously exerted himself to bring about a reconciliation, but had been obliged to abandon the idea as hopeless; and in the interests of his client was reluctantly compelled to bring the case before the Court. Mrs. Brooker had been married for five years and had always been a faithful wife. About the 26th January last, her suspicions were excited, and from a letter addressed to her husband; which had fallen into her hands, she had good grounds for believing that the had been supplanted in the affections of her husband by the wife of another man. Since that time her husband had deserted her and had stopped her credit at the stores. He was a butcher in good circumstances, and he trusted their Worships would see the propriety of making an order for her maintenance which would bear some proportion to the means of the husband. She had one child, and was again on the eve of her confinement and he thought that under all circumstances of the case £3 per week was little enough. Elizabeth Brooker was then sworn and stated that she was married to the defendant on he 5th December, 1860 (marriage certificate put in.) About four weeks ago she got a letter at the post office addressed to her husband (the Bench declined to read the letter, and it was not read to the Court.) She recognised the handwriting, and opened it. She spoke to her husband about the letter and begged him to swear to her that he would never have anything further to do with the woman who wrote it. Her husband replied that he would do as he liked and she could do the some. He would not breakfast with her the next morning and had not lived with her since. He had also stopped her credit at the stores and said he would rather take the gallows than speak to her again. The defendant said he had nothing to say excepting that he would support, but would not live with his wife in future. Ordered to pay 30s. per week into Court for the maintenance of his wife; the amount to be increased after her confinement. Note: OBITUARY OBITUARY MRS. E. RAY The death occurred at her daughter Mrs. John Gillard's residence, 33 Murray street, Wagga, yesterday afternoon, of Mrs. Elizabeth Ray, after an illness of three weeks, at the age of 87 years. The deceased was born at Campbelltown, and had been a resident of Wagga practically all her life. She was twice married, her first husband having been the late Mr. John Brooker. Her second husband, the late Mr. George Ray, was accidentally killed at Wagga about 30 years ago. Three daughters survive, Mrs. John Gillard, Wagga, Mrs H. Thomas of Temora, and Miss Emma Brooker of Sydney; and four sons, Messrs. Walter Brooker of Sydney, William and Arthur Brooker of Wagga, and Albert Brooker of Western Australia. The funeral will move from Mrs. Gillard's residence at 11 o'clock this morning for the Church of England cemetery, Wagga. Interment took place in the Church of England cemetery, Wagga, where the Rev. W. Boake, of Wagga, officiated. The coffin, which was laden with floral tributes, was carried to the grave by Messrs Arthur Brooker, sen. (son), S. Gillard, J. Brooker, A. Brooker (grandsons), Alfred Dean, and Peter Gillard. The pall bearers were Messrs Walter Brooker (son), Jack Gillard and Arthur Gillard (grandsons), Edward Oakman, T.Chambers and W. Sonneman. The chief mourners at the, graveside were Messrs J.
